Abstract.

2002-12-03

Nodularin, the hepatotoxin produced by Nodularia spumigena, was measured in order to get an estimate of cyanobacteria biomass and to observe its potential harmful effects on the plankton. Nodularin is known to correlate strongly with N. spumigena –1 + 3 – – Nodularia spumigena Mertens ex Bornet & Flahault is a bloom-forming, filamentous cyanobacterium occurring in many brackish and estuarine waters worldwide. Microcystis aeruginosa Kützing is another marine/freshwater widespread cyanobacteria, which can form harmful blooms and is characterized by small cells usually organized into colonies. The stimulation by iron was most probably linked to physiological photoprotection mechanisms.

Nodularia spumigena effects

The toxin-producing cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena is an important component of the Baltic Sea plankton community, and its filaments are likely to provide a microenvironment suitable for the development of a particular bacteria flora. 2009-07-22 Also, the possible transfer of toxins from one trophic level to another and the effect of different phases of cyanobacteria blooms on the pelagial carbon flow are largely unknown.6 Fig. 2 .62Development of parameters showing cyanobacterial decay during the experiment in mesocosm bags with Nodularia spumigena (n = 4), and in the control without cyanobacteria. Nodularia spumigena is an estuarine cyanobacteria that produces the toxin nodularin. This toxic cyanobacteria is known to have caused death to domestic and wild animals and is recognised as dangerous to human health. N. spumigena causes harmful algal blooms in many parts of the world including Australia. 2019-12-21 1986-03-01 Silveira and Odebrecht Effects of Salinity and T emperature on the Nodularia spumigena animal mortality, contamination of seafood, degradation of water quality ( V an Buynder et al., 2001 ), a Massive blooms of toxic cyanobacteria frequently occur in the central Baltic Sea during the summer. In the surface scum, cyanobacterial cells are exposed to high light (HL) intensity, high oxygen partial pressure and other stresses.

A. flos-aquae and Anabaena spp. are generally not toxic in the Baltic Sea (Sivonen et al., 1989).

Colonial and filamentous cyanobacteria frequently have bacteria associated with their extracellular mucus zone or more tightly attached to their cells surface. The toxin-producing cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena is an important component of the Baltic Sea plankton community, and its filaments are likely to provide a microenvironment suitable for the development of a particular bacteria flora.
