What is ISO 13849-1:2015 Or. page 3 • PL (Performance Level) is a technology-neutral concept that can be used for electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic safety solutions. • SIL (Safety Integrity Level) can, however, only be used for electrical, electronic or programmable safety solutions. Experience EN ISO 13849-1 uses categories from EN 954-1 for defining It is generally accepted that the majority of industry uses ISO 13849-1 (PL) because the machine builders were previously using EN 954-1, which have naturally migrated to ISO 13849-1 (PL). This is reinforced by a survey illustrated below that was carried out by the joint working group of ISO/TC 199 – IEC/TC 44, which at the time was considering the merging of IEC 62061 and ISO 13849-1. The European Standard EN ISO 13849-1:2008 has the status of a Swedish Standard. The standard was 2008-06-23 approved and published as SS-EN ISO 13849-1:2008 in English. This document contains a Swedish language version of EN ISO 13849-1:2008. The two versions are valid in parallel. NOTE 1 Designated architectures are defined in Annex B of EN ISO 13849-1 to give a simplified approach for quantification of performance level. NOTE 2 For complex electronics: Use of designated architectures according to EN ISO 13849-1 up to PL=d or any architecture according to EN IEC 62061.

This revision has caused major changes in the fundamentals of safety system design. The EN 954-1 standard (categories) is being phased out and replaced by EN ISO 13849-1 (PL, Performance Level) and EN 62061 (SIL, Safety Integrity Level). Although the deadline for using EN 954-1 is set to 31/12/2011, it is beneficial to start applying the new standards as soon as possible as many new standards no longer refer to EN 954-1. ISO 13849-1:2015 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software.

EN ISO 13849-1 goes beyond the qualitative approach of EN 954-1 to include a quantitative assessment of the safety functions. Performance levels (PL) are defined in EN ISO 13849-1 to classify different safety-related capacities into their respective categories.

The hazardous situation is classified into five levels, known as Performance Levels (PL), from PL "a" (low) to PL "e" (high). The required PL is determined and assigned as part of the risk assessment in accordance EN ISO 13849-1.

EN ISO 13849-1/-2: Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems As the successor to EN 954-1, EN ISO 13849-1 is the main safety standard for the design of safety-related control systems for machinery. I EN ISO 13849-1 betecknar man säkerhetsnivåerna med PL (P erformance L evel) klass a till e där e är högsta nivån.

The required PL is determined and assigned as part of the risk assessment in accordance EN ISO 13849-1. ISO 13849-1 (Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems - General principles for design), an international standard, was revised in 2006. EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 are standards which relate specifically to safety system design. From 1st January 2012 these are the only safety system design standards which give the presumption of conformity with the MD. The status of harmonised standards for EU Directives is regularly reviewed and published in the Official Journal of the EU. EN ISO 13849-1 is the most important standard for regulating the basic principles and performance required of a safety control system for machines and devices.
